Sharing stories and themes: pets and favorite animals

Do your students have pets?

Have you ever asked your students about their pets? … stories and anecdotes?
If they don’t have a pet…do they have a favorite animal they may like to talk about?

Kids, and most adults love stories about animals. Myself I volunteered as a Visitor Guide for almost a year in the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where I was lucky to meet amazing teachers and experts in interpretation, marine ecology and conservation. They generously shared knowledge and “How to’s…” in subjects such as communicating with visitors and, ‘making a difference’ with each and every interaction…. stories and anecdotes about animals.

Did you know that the octopus is a very intelligent animal? We heard great stories about the ways an octopus disguises, changing its color and shape, also to fit in the most incredible places. It seems they keep something like a toy collection in their “backyard garden”, i.e. a pile of bones and other treasures they gather nearby.

Children immediately connected when we shared an interesting (to them different and new…) story about any animal, in as much as they could follow and share our story co-operating with their own questions and imagination. Their skills in making relevant questions and adding to our stories were impressive.

Back to language teaching, what if….you conduct a classroom survey?

What is the name of your favorite animal?

What does it like to eat? What other things can it eat?

Where does it live? Draw a picture / brief description of its whereabouts.

Describe its skin….what do you feel if you touch it?

Does it make a special sound? How do you think it communicates with its animal peers? E.g. Did you know that whales are masters at sound communication?

Does the animal like to play? How?

Give some examples of your own choice….My chosen e.g.’s:Did you know that sea otters make funny noises with small rocks and shells when they are ‘cracking’ open their seafood?
Did you know the sea urchin is the otter’s favorite food? And by eating it they contribute to a balance in the amounts of kelp in the kelp forests, since the urchins’ favorite food happens to be kelp.
And so on….

You may then group the children by animals of preference or distribute a list of different animals amongst teams, let them surprise you with their internet or other research and findings. They should share in groups or individually their findings with their Classroom friends and colleagues. Pictures, posters, book references, personal photographs and other to be included when possible in team brief presentations.
